The Weltecho building in Chemnitz gets a Facelift

A fresh start for the New Year, new approaches to a historic building will be presented in “Anbau”, an exhibition starting on January 21 in Weltecho Chemnitz.

18 international artists from the Bauhaus-University Weimar’s MFA program „Art in Public Space and New Artistic Strategies” present proposals for permanent art installations in the Weltecho building in Chemnitz.

The Master of Fine Arts students participated in a virtual competition, suggesting artistic installations for the façade, the yard or the rooftop of the building that respond to the character of the building. The students, coming from all over the world, expand on a multiplicity of viewpoints by taking their cultural background as starting point to see this place anew and show their spatial prospects dealing with public space.

The exhibition, titled “Anbau”, showcases different artistic forms, ranging from sculpture to video installation. It examines the building’s past, present and future; as well as its relation to the city and surrounding environment.

Spanning from the sublime to the practical, the show reflects the students global outlook and unique perspectives. For example, Serbian artist Nicola Djordjevic examines the unreliability of memory in a video installation; Chinese artist Xing Lang Guo uses light to add life to the building and German artist Johannes Abendroth’s installation actualizes the ephemeral nature of echoes.

The project aims not just to serve as an exercise of the imagination but rather as an exhibition of the possibilities of post-industrial Chemnitz. This interesting kaleidoscope of ideas truly embodies the city’s connection to the world and renders it attractive to youth and creativity.

The Weltecho building holds important pieces of Chemnitz history and has gone through vast transformations and different uses over the years: originally built in 1908 for the third largest newspaper in Saxony, it survived the bombings of WWII. In GDR times it was used as the  „Kammer Der Technik“ (Chamber of Technology), an institution for engineering and science. In 2007 the art group O.S.C.A.R e. V. moved in and turned it into an important cultural and contemporary art space, hosting local and international artistic projects. The upcoming exhibition is expected to be another stage in the building's constant evolution.

The exhibition shows the outcome and results of the semester project “Art and Architecture” which was led by the MFA guest professors Hans Hemmert and Georg Zey (Inges Idee, Berlin). It is hosted by the Weltecho, the artist space run by the Chemnitz based Oscar e.V., the living spirit behind the premises.

The students present models of their proposals, accompanied by explanations of their concepts. The exhibition will be open from January 22 until February 25th. The public is warmly welcomed to join the individual jury presentations on January 21, starting at 10:00 and the opening event starting at 19:00.
