World Tennis Championships and a sensational development on the tennis court
The beginnings of Lacoste date back to the world tennis championships in 1926 - the US Open. In order to understand the significance of that event, you should know that back then tennis fashion was completely different than it is now. Competitors had to wear a special uniform made of trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. Rene Lacoste decided to stand out and wore a white short-sleeved t-shirt of his own design. The tee was made of French cotton known as jersey petit pique. It drew attention of the audience right away. People loved the original style sported by the French tennis player. This is why one Rene Lacoste finished his sports career, he decided to establish a fashion company in collaboration with Andre Gillier (the largest knitwear manufacturer in France). It happened in 1933.
Alligator-inspired logo
Initially, the full business name of the company was: La Societe Chemie Lacoste, which was a reference to the founder’s name and to other people involved in elite sports such as tennis, golf, cricket and polo. It was only in the 1980s that the brand name was abbreviated to "Lacoste." The logo was not left to chance, either, because Rene decided to make use of... the nickname the press gave him in 1927. It as because of his suitcase, made of alligator skin. He was rarely seen without it. The press loved it and since then Rene Lacoste was dubbed “the Alligator.” The public immediately took to this nick and Lacoste himself liked it, too. Could there be a better idea for a logo? Not in this case!
