The breakthrough for the New Era brand came in 1934, when the company managed to sign a contract with the Cleveland Indians. This was the first Major League Baseball team to sell a hat license to the brand. The company did not have to wait long for further successes, especially since the New Era 59Fifty, sometimes called the "Brooklyn Style", premiered in 1954. Harold Koch, the son of the brand's founder, was responsible for it. Thanks to the Surplus and product redesigns he introduced, by the mid-1960s New Era was already producing headwear for half of all MLB teams.

Decades of intense growth allowed the New Era brand to gain an exclusive MLB license in 1993. So the company's next target became other sports - basketball, soccer or cricket. In 2017, the New Era brand became the first manufacturer with exclusive licenses in the three biggest American leagues: MLB, NBA and NFL.
