Kangol was founded by Jacques Spreiregen in north-west England. Its first client was the British army, which ordered a batch of Kangol berets during World War II. Then came the members of the English Olympic team - their headwear had its moment at the opening ceremony of the 1948 Olympics. But the real game-changer was the seamless flat cap (model 504) – they are still considered one of a kind.
In the 1960s Kangol became increasingly popular among famous musicians, designers and other celebrities. Flat caps were sported by the Beatles, Mary Quant and Pierre Cardin. In the 1980s the characteristic kangaroo first appeared on the headwear and the crowd of Kangol fans expanded to include for example: Liam Gallagher, Michael Jordan, Samuel L. Jackson or Madonna. This publicity has made Kangol one of the few recognisable headwear brands.
